Gateways W7OWO and W7OWO-10 UHF Back to Normal Operations

The Simulated Internet Outage drill for W7OWO and W7OWO-10 has complete and the gateways now are running in the normal modes. In real Internet Outages they should automatically go into Hold For Internet Resumption, but can be treated as a Post Office during the outage.

The RMS Relay generated banner can make it confusing as it fails to mention the Post Office feature. I had many queries about it wondering if it was really working and several that suggested to me that I had selected the wrong options. It does work the way I configured it. There were 30 message exchanges that occurred during the simulated outage. Received PO based message on W7OWO ranged from the city next door to Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Total distance of these PO based messages was over 12620 miles, averaging 421 miles per message. All with no Internet component.

No Internet needed, no special message format, no special Winlink Session. Just the knowledge that if you see a gateway stating "No CMS connection is currently available. Messages will be held until the Internet connection is available and then forwarded." RMS Relay is not telling the whole story. The gateway can behave as a Post Office. As a Post Office, your recipient must connect to that gateway to retrieve it. Otherwise when the internet is restored, the message will be passed via the CMS.
