Once again, Winlink using 9600 bd packet P2P was used to send 18 files from the Summit of Pikes Peak (14,115 ft) to a coordination point about 5.5 miles away and 5000 ft down the mountain. Equipment used: Yaesu radios and PK96 USB TNCs. Driving between the points as 12.4 miles, 156 turns, and takes 30-40 minutes. Data transfer takes less than 2 minutes.
During the 15 Dec 2021 windstorm, the Colorado Springs gateway ran on battery power for over an hour until the batteries for the computer gave up. They should have lasted a lot longer. Will have to replace them with fresher batteries. Batteries for the radios did well. Power was out for about 3 to 4 hours. Internet went down for almost two days, so a WiFi hotspot was pressed into service and the gateway was back online as soon as power was restored. Surprisingly all antennas did fine.
Winlink once again worked beautifully to transfer some 20 data files off the summit of Pikes Peak to a peer station far below for this annual event. Winlink makes it very easy to not only transfer the files, but also to attach them from and save them to USB thumb drives for delivery. As in years past, we used 9600 Bd packet.
