W1SOM-10 Down For Service

W1SOM-10, Somers (CT) Emergency Management, is down for major service, antenna and computer replacement. It is anticipated to be down approx. 4 days.

W3SWL-10 Central PA Gateway on 145.090 now has UPS

An APC 1050VA UPS has been installed on the W3SWL-10 Winlink node. For now, just the control computer is running on the UPS. Hopefully this will smooth out any short power interruptions that have caused the computer to go down in the past.

We will test how long the computer can remain up on the APC battery backup supply. I am guessing at least an hour.

PowerChute software has been installed on the node computer, and that should gracefully shut down the computer in the event of longer-term power outages.

W7OWO-10 VHF Has Updated Radio

The 40 year old ICOM 25A used by this gateway is being retired.

It has been replaced by a IC-2730. Still limited to VARA Narrow, testing has shown consistently getting VARA Speed Levels of 7-10 with occasional 11's from a local client.

We need PCB Designer, fabricator and supply chain expertise. We need developers who can move our programs to new platforms and environments, keep pace with internet mail and security standards, and to help innovate for the future. Outstanding Volunteers

The Winlink system is run entirely by volunteers. Those called Gateway Station Sysops, who support and run over a thousand stations around the world, are special. They are essential for providing the radio network that allows us to use Winlink radio email. Without them, there is no Winlink. Apart from the Gateway Station Sysops and Development Team, there are other volunteers that run e-mail groups and tutorials, manage user accounts, register software, update the network's assets and catalogs, test and debug products, provide training, and independently write software.
